As Labor Day approaches, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is introducing a new initiative that aims to ease the security screening experience for families traveling with young children. The “Families on the Fly” campaign is now operational at each of Tampa International Airport’s four airsides, featuring dedicated family lanes that streamline security screening for parents and their kids. The new lanes were officially unveiled at an event at TPA’s Airside E Tuesday morning.
“We understand that air travel can be challenging, especially for parents managing strollers, diaper bags, and young kids,” said TSA’s Federal Security Director Kirk Skinner. “The ‘Families on the Fly’ campaign offers dedicated security lanes for families with children aged 12 and under, creating a more efficient and family-friendly screening process. Our goal is to make air travel secure, smart, and supportive for families.”

TPA is among several major airports across the country implementing the “Families on the Fly” initiative. Other participating airports include Orlando and Jacksonville International, Charlotte-Douglas International, and John Wayne Airport, among others. TSA has plans to expand these family-friendly lanes to additional airports nationwide in the near future.
In addition to the “Families on the Fly” campaign, TSA has rolled out other initiatives this summer to improve the travel experience for passengers. The “Serve with Honor, Travel with Ease” campaign recognizes the service and sacrifices of military personnel and their families, offering expedited access for military members through TSA PreCheck lanes at select airports.
Moreover, TSA reminds travelers that military personnel and civilian Department of Defense (DOD) staff are eligible for free TSA PreCheck by using their DOD ID number as their Known Traveler Number when booking flights. Children aged 12 and under may accompany service members in TSA PreCheck lanes without restrictions, while minors aged 13-17 must be on the same airline reservation with a TSA PreCheck-eligible parent or guardian.
For families looking to streamline their travel process, TSA is currently offering a limited-time promotion: “Buy One Get One for $15 off” for TSA PreCheck enrollments. This deal allows families to save money when signing up together, making it easier for households to take advantage of expedited screening.
Additionally, the TSA Cares program continues to be available, offering assistance for passengers with disabilities or medical conditions, ensuring that all travelers have a smoother experience through security.
As travel demand continues to rise, TSA urges all travelers to prepare and allow plenty of time for airport security screening. For more information on the “Families on the Fly” initiative, military travel benefits, or to learn more about TSA PreCheck, visit tsa.gov
