Go Beyond the Plate
Over the course of just a few hours, participants get a true sense of the area they are touring. This includes sampling signature dishes from multiple stops, exploring neighborhoods, and receiving personalized tips on how to enjoy the town. Guests meet the chefs and restaurateurs behind their dishes, uncovering the personal stories and cultural roots that shape the neighborhood.
Operating rain or shine, Beyond the Plate guided tours span up to five locations per outing. Each stop is spaced roughly 10 minutes apart by foot. Each leisurely stroll between restaurants offers fun facts about the surrounding neighborhood and the businesses that participants are visiting. It’s a relaxing, immersive way to get a pulse on the food and drink scene.
“I wanted to show people they don’t need to cross a bridge or tunnel into New York City to have the kind of culinary experiences I love,” says Alessia Aron, founder of Beyond the Plate. “I wanted to give a platform to the people who work so hard to put incredible dishes and drinks in front of us,” she explains. “So many chefs and owners work tirelessly behind the scenes. Some prefer to stay there, but many welcome the chance to connect with guests and share their story.”
About the Business
Beyond the Plate launched in Jersey City, where they currently offer tours of the Downtown and Heights sections. Alessia has also lived in Jersey City for more than 14 years, so she is intimately familiar with the area. She recalls a time when the city was just beginning to emerge as a food and culture destination.

But as the city evolved, so did the food tours. With the rise of restaurants featuring innovative bar programs and specialty cocktails, Beyond the Plate adapted its itineraries to reflect the growing influence of mixology and craft beverages. To date, the company has partnered with more than 100 local restaurants, highlighting the diverse culinary voices shaping the area.
For Alessia, it’s this deeper connection that transforms Beyond the Plate into more than a typical food tour. By meeting the chefs, mixologists, brewers, and small business owners behind the scenes, guests gain a richer understanding of the community and the passion driving its culinary innovation.
“When people feel connected to someone’s story, they want to come back and support them,” says Alessia. “It’s about becoming part of something bigger—sharing in the story of the city through food and drink.”
