The Best All-inclusive Resorts for Families

The Best All-inclusive Resorts for Families

As a travel writer and novelist, I spend a lot of time on planes and in hotels, ships, resorts, and adventure lodges. When it comes time to truly relax and connect with my family on vacation, I’m seeking all-inclusive luxury with plenty of options to keep my kids busy…giving me the chance to exhale, read, and even learn about a new culture.

All-inclusive resorts run the gamut from dazzling properties that offer unlimited adventures for all ages to boutique-sized gems that appeal to a traveler who never thought she’d want an all-inclusive vacation but then realized how much she hated cooking, cleaning, and being in charge of the fun. (OK, this traveler is me.)

In making this list of the best all-inclusive resorts for families, I considered location, culinary offerings, luxury spa and wellness options (I’m a tired mom!), and activities for families to share together – I cherish the memory of visiting a Costa Rican family farm during a recent visit to Hacienda AltaGracia, Auberge Resorts Collection. To choose the best of the best, I combined first-hand experience at editor-loved properties and past and present winners of T+L’s World’s Best Awards and It List awards.

If you are yearning for both relaxation and family connection, you are not alone. These hand-picked properties will thrill children of all ages and allow parents some time for serenity, too.

Why I’m the Expert

Amanda Eyre Ward is a New York Times’ bestselling novelist and travel writer. She didn’t leave the Eastern Time Zone until she was 19 years old and has been making up for lost time ever since. Along with her husband and children, she has enjoyed everything from backcountry camping trips with pack llamas to unimaginable luxury vacations that included private butlers and room service in glamorous hotel suites. Her daughter is a vegetarian; she and her husband like to be left alone to read; one son is an adrenaline junkie; and one son is a Type One diabetic and an adrenaline junkie. In other words, she knows from experience about the complications and joys of family travel.

Know Before You Go

Not all all-inclusive resorts are created equal

All-inclusive resorts can vary as much as the picturesque countries where they are located. While some may include every cup of coffee, margarita, and massage, others may add-on for extras. Excursions off-property often cost extra, as do some upscale restaurants and spa treatments. Be sure to investigate what’s included before you begin indulging.

Choose a resort that caters to the type of trip you’re looking for

Have a conversation about family members’ dreams and priorities before choosing a resort; the list of activities on offer can be overwhelming, and getting kids involved in planning can get your vacation started before you even leave town. Some resorts focus heavily on luxury and relaxation, while others are more adventure- and activity-oriented. Decide what type of vacation you want to have and select an all-inclusive property accordingly.

How We Chose These Hotels

Amanda Eyre Ward is a New York Times’ bestselling novelist and travel writer who has traveled the world both with and without her family. She has visited many of these properties personally, and has thoroughly researched each hotel’s location, unique amenities, dining options, overall atmosphere, and past guest reviews. T+L editors also contributed their own recommendations and vouched for each property on the list. Each hotel aligns with our core T+L Hotel Values and many have appeared in our T+L World’s Best Awards list, sometimes multiple times, or on the highly coveted It List. Amanda’s new novel, Lovers and Liars, was inspired by a past Travel + Leisure assignment.
